The past year has been a whirlwind for all, but it’s been particularly momentous for the folks at Longtab Brewing. One of San Antonio’s newest breweries, they’ve just hit the one year milestone. I’ve the last year I’ve been lucky enough to try many of their brews and have enjoyed the experience.
In celebration of the milestone, I dropped in for some to-go brews including their Bearded Bastard Double IPA.
It pours a light amber color with a mostly transparent body. A short but dense head builds and holds shape reasonably well.
That aroma sets the stage for a tasty flavor. The sabro hop’s signature mild coconut aroma is accentuated by a slight piney hoppy bitterness. A slight warmth sits on the aroma and offers a mild burn on the nostril.
Flavor wise, it’s an intense set of different flavors. It opens with a sweet and tropical mix of flavors with a base of coconut, citrus and stone fruit. On the back end, a rush of hoppy bitterness sets in which retains in the aftertaste and builds slightly. A persistent, mild coconut twist sits in the aftertaste as well.
The mouthfeel is smooth and mid-bodied creating an excellent experience.

This one is a truly outstanding brew. I really appreciate the balanced mix of a sweet, tropical front end and a powerfully (but not overwhelming) bitterness on the backend. The sabro hop really shines in this one and your personal interest in it will likely dictate whether or not you enjoy it.
One of the many great brews offered by Longtab, I highly recommend checking it out. See more about Longtab here.
Bearded Bastard is rated 4.18/5 on Untappd but is not rated on Beer Advocate.
