Round 1, Bout 29 of Master of Marzen 2021 sees Main & Mill Brewing Co. (Missouri) vs. MobCraft Beer Inc. (Wisconsin).
This is an exciting bout as both breweries are first-time entrants. Let’s get this rolling.
Two really different takes on label design here.
Main & Mill has an interesting background that looks like graphing paper with a horn and pretzel out front. The color scheme meshes with the blue on blue that’s famous for Oktoberfest.
MobCraft’s Mobtoberfest has a busy label with Bavarian check border. The historical keg is sided by accordions, fall leaves and other seasonal iconography.
I enjoy both labels, but have to give this point to Main & Mill as they have a cleaner design that ties in neatly to the season. Running total: Man & Mill 1-0 MobCraft.
Oktoberfestus has quite a powerful aroma. A strong malty backbone offers a dry earthiness and a mild warmth. The warmth lingers on the nose.
Mobtoberfest is also a reasonably strong smelling brew. A malty baseline has a vaguely coffee quality about it. A warmth also holds on the nose.
After a few additional sniffs, I have to give the edge to Main & Mill. Their brew has a more intense and more typically Oktoberfest aroma. Running total: Man & Mill 2-0 MobCraft.
Oktoberfestus is a uniformly flavorful brew from start to finish. A deep, toasted malt backbone with an earthy baseline and a hoppy bitterness rolls through into the aftertaste where it persists and builds a little from sip to sip. It’s a very flavorful brew.
Mobtoberfest is also quite a uniform flavor experience. It’s a particularly malty brew that is mostly earthy with just enough sweet to round it out. The earthy bitter holds, with the sweetness receding quickly and causing a yearning for the next sip.
The edge here goes to MobCraft. Running total: Man & Mill 2-1 MobCraft.
Oktoberfestus is mid-bodied and smooth with a fairly low carbonation point. It’s quite crisp and refreshing.
Mobtoberfest is a bit lighter, has a lower carbonation, and is generally smoother.
As you can see above, Oktoberfestus is a significantly darker brew, and is quite a bit more opaque. Both brews retain head pretty well, but I think it’s fair to say Mobtoberfest is the winner on lacing.
In my view, MobCraft takes the point on both mouthfeel and head Renton/lacing. Running total: Main & Mill 2-2 MobCraft.
And now we move on to the People’s Choice which is decided by public poll on my Instagram story.
As you can see, MobCraft secured this point with 56% of the vote. Running total: Main & Mill 2-3 MobCraft.
Main & Mill got off to a big lead but MobCraft managed to claw back and take the bout with 3/5 points. They now move on to the second Round where they meet the winner of deBine vs. Twisted Spike.
