Round 2, Bout 16 of Master of Marzen 2021 sees MobCraft Beer Inc. vs. Twisted Spike Brewing Co.
MobCraft are first-time entrants in Master of Marzen and Twisted Spike are returning champions from 2020. MobCraft qualified for this Bout after besting Main & Mill in Round 1, while Twisted Spike progressed against de Bine.
Both brews lean into Oktoberfest, but bring their own personality.
Mobtoberfest sees icons including accordions, pretzels and multiple other seasonally appropriate icons centered around a giant keg. It’s bordered by Bavarian check and features clean branding.
Spiketoberfest sees a Bavarian-check background and a giant keg. The branding is prominent at for “Spiketoberfest” but the lower text gets lost a little.
This one goes to MobCraft. Running total: MobCraft 1-0 Twisted Spike.
Mobtoberfest offers and intense aroma. A deep malty backbone is sweet and earthy, carrying a significant warmth that lingers on the nose. This is basically textbook Marzen.
Spiketoberfest also offers a particularly intense aroma. Sweet caramel toasted malts lead the way, with a slight floral nature and a mild heat.
Spiketoberfest is a pleasant smelling brew, but Mobtoberfest has to take the point as it’s incredibly powerful, quite complex, and tremendously balanced. Running total: MonCraft 2-0 Twisted Spike.
Mobtoberfest opens mild, but it soon sees an intense rush of flavor on the backend. Slightly sweet and very earthy, the backend retains into the aftertaste. The sweetness soon subsides, leaving a persistent, crisp bitterness that builds a tad.
Spiketoberfest is a uniformly flavorful experience. Sweet, clean and slightly earthy, it’s a warm and welcoming brew that doesn’t hold back on the flavor side of things. The earthiness holds into the backend and builds quite a bit between sips.
Both are tasty brews, but the base flavor, uniform intensity and relative longevity of the aftertaste pushes Spiketoberfest ahead here. Running total: MobCraft 2-1 Twisted Spike.
Mobtoberfest is a mid-bodied and smooth brew with medium carbonation. It’s quite refreshing, but also mildly bloating.
Spiketoberfest is a mid-bodied and smooth brew with a lower carbonation, that liberally coats the mouth. The lower carbonation makes it an easy drinking and refreshing brew.
As you can see above, the Mobtoberfest is a slightly lighter colored brew. It also leads on both head retention and lacing.
Spiketoberfest holds a significant lead on mouthfeel but Mobtoberfest leads on head retention/lacing. I’m giving the edge to Spiketoberfest as I weigh the mouthfeel as the most conducive to a good drinking experience. Running total: MobCraft 2-2 Twisted Spike.
