Beer Review – Blue Moon Belgian White

Blue Moon Belgian White is a witbier style brew produced in Golden, Colorado by the Coors Brewing Company. It has an ABV of 5.4%.

About the Brand

One of MillerCoors’ better known brands, Blue Moon Belgian White is readily available in stores, bars and restaurants all over America. While the Blue Moon brand also carries a number of other flavors (including their IPA, cinnamon horchata and rotating seasonal flavors) Belgian White is by far the most common.

The Blue Moon brands have won numerous industry awards such as the 1995 World Beer Championships gold medal for the White Beer category and silver medals in the 1996 and 1997 iterations of the same competition.

Blue Moon has drawn significant controversy as some believe it is masquerading as a craft beer, despite being brewed by one of the largest brewing companies on the planet. This issue escalated with a 2015 class action lawsuit, alleging Blue Moon of using inappropriate branding tactics to capitalize on the growing trend of craft brews.

About the Beer

As stated in my previous reviews, I very much enjoy witbier. For this reason, Blue Moon is one of my favorite widely-available domestic brews. As Blue Moon is inexpensive and can be found practically anywhere, it’s my go-to “safe” beer.

It presents with a cloudy, dark orange color and has a slightly sweet aroma. Its tones of orange and cilantro add a nice touch to its smooth consistency. All in all, Blue Moon Belgian White is a pleasant, yet fairly unadventurous brew.

It is versatile in that in can be drunk consistently over the course of a night or as a single beer to accompany a meal of almost any style. Realistically speaking, there are few instances in which Blue Moon Belgian White would feel particularly out of place.

Blue Moon Belgian White is an excellent option for an everyday brew. Its affordability and general availability mean that a bottle, can, or pint is never that far away.

Rating: 7.5/10

  1. Most people don’t know this, but Blue Moon is about the same price as Budweiser. I would absolutely choose Blue Moon 10/10 times.
